Children's Class: Middle Eastern Dance and Music Camp!

Kids discover a beautiful world of cultural dance and music as they learn, exercise, and have fun together! Learn basic movements and dance steps from Middle Eastern belly dance and social dance (presented in an age-appropriate manner for our young participants). Plus, each class will also include a special enrichment segment, so you'll learn about the musical instruments, beautiful costumes, languages, and the lands from which the dance originates.

Themes for each week:

• July 7: A Whole New World Get a taste for the countries of Turkey, the Middle East, and North Africa--the lands from which these dance forms originate! Find them on a map, learn a greeting, and then learn some social dancing: basic belly dance moves people of the region use on the dance floor, plus simple steps from a Turkish line dance and a Persian Gulf folk dance. 

• July 14: Arms, sways and veils! From Persia to Morocco, learn about powerful arms, snake-like movements, and colorful scarves and veils sometimes used in the dance.

• July 21: Drums, music and dancing fun! Learn about the rhythms and instruments you hear in the music. Dance to the rhythms, and learn to play a couple of rhythms yourself. For this class, we will be joined by Twin Cities drumming instructor Dr. Dave.

• July 28: Exotic Egypt! Learn a bit about the fascinating history and geography of the ancient and diverse land! Watch and learn dance moves from some of this country's dances, hear the music, see beautiful photos and costumes from the region, and learn about the Egyptian celebrations..  

Important notes: Children may register for the full session or for individual classes. A parent or guardian will be required to complete and sign an additional form the first day the child attends class. Adults are welcome--but generally not required--to stay for the class. This class is designed for kids who are about to enter 1st through 3rd grade. Children younger than 1st grade require prior approval from the instructor.

Fees:

Advanced registration or email reservation of your space in the class is strongly recommended, as some classes may include handouts or other materials. In such cases, we can only guarantee sufficient materials for students we know will be attending. Thank you for your understanding!
